On August 16 of this year, the representative of The Council of Europe Development Bank, Diana Bertje, visited the Academic Centre of the University of Latvia (UL) to discuss the construction process of the Scripture House and to agree on further cooperation within the framework of the third stage of the Academic Centre development project The Council of Europe Development Bank is one of the financiers of the House of Letters.

According to Diana Bertje, UL by developing the Academic Centre has proven its competence in financial and project management by implementing large-scale projects. The Board of the Council of Europe Development Bank already decided in autumn 2021 to allocate funding for the development of the Academic Centre, emphasizing the House of Health and the House of Sports projects.

The representative of the Council of Europe Development Bank was welcomed by the chairman of the UL council, prof. Ivars Kalviņš, rector of UL, prof. Indriķis Muižnieks, chairman of the Strategic Council of the UL, prof. Andrejs Ērglis and the team of UL Academic Centre development programme.

In the opinion of prof. Ivars Kalviņš, there are currently several significant challenges that should be worked on in order to promote the creation of innovations and the transfer of technologies. The further development of the UL Academic Centre could significantly help to create the necessary infrastructure for the commercialization of science and the development of research in Latvia.

Evaluating the cooperation with the Council of Europe Development Bank in the financing of the House of Letters, prof. Indriķis Muižnieks emphasized the role of its support for humanities and social sciences, as the most ambitious support for these fields of sciences since the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia.

After prof. Andrejs Ērglis thoughts UL Academic Centre is the core of science, research and study development in the Baltic region. The implementation of the third phase projects of the UL Academic Centre is an important next step for Latvia to become more and more visible in the European science space and for international cooperation to develop.

During the visit, UL confirmed its readiness to continue cooperation with the Council of Europe Development Bank, implementing future projects necessary for research development and technology transfer in Latvia.

In order to get acquainted with the implementation progress of the House of Letters project and preparations for laying the foundation stone on August 25, Diana Bertje and prof. Ivars Kalviņš visited the construction site of the future House of Letters. In addition to the construction of the House of Letters, in the next few years it is planned to build the House of Technologies, the House of Health, the House of Sports and the House of Students and Guests in the Academic Centre of the UL.

The Council of Europe Development Bank was founded in 1956 and provides loans and guarantees to the bank's 42 member states. Latvia became a member state of the Council of Europe Development Bank in 1998.
